Spanish Language and Culture, BA
Offered as a Bachelor of Arts Major
The Spanish Language and Culture BA provides a liberal arts education that explores the history, culture, literature and artwork of a variety of Spanish-speaking countries. Students who major in Spanish Language and Culture study the Spanish language at an advanced level and develop an understanding of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world. The program gives students the tools to develop and present university-level research in Spanish, and to incorporate various cultural and/or intellectual perspectives in their work.
Because of the strong liberal arts and language focus of this degree, students develop strong communication and analytical skills. Students apply their language skills and further develop cultural competence by completing an international internship or a local, community-based work experience. This prepares students for work in a variety of fields that require advanced knowledge of Spanish language and cultures. When combined with another major or minor, this degree adds a new facet to the student’s skill set and makes them more employable than candidates who speak only English.

Program Preparation
Students with an interest in the Spanish language and the countries/cultures in which it is spoken (including the US) will fit perfectly into 91¶¶Òõ’s Spanish Language and Culture program. Whether entering with some language proficiency or none at all, students will hone their language skills while studying Spanish-speaking literature, film, art, and culture, and discovering how historical and political contexts shaped each of these phenomena.
Degree Roadmap
The core of this degree is a variety of Spanish language, literature, and culture classes (52 credits), combined with real world experience that is gained by completing an internship abroad or a local community work experience. Research in Spanish is also a key part of the program, which is developed throughout the curriculum and culminates with the final capstone project. To ensure that students are well rounded and to maximize their future job opportunities, 91¶¶Òõ also requires them to complete a Minor, a Certificate, a second Major, or 20 credits of study abroad.
Capstone
All students in the language and culture major must complete a capstone project that demonstrates the skills and knowledge acquired during the completion of the major. The capstone project includes an analytical research paper and annotated bibliography following standard MLA format. The research is presented before students and a panel of foreign languages and literatures faculty.
